Brain Child Spelling Bee Competition – First Edition

The maiden edition of The Brain Child Spelling Bee Competition organised by Care Hub Foundation was held on the 31st of July, 2021 at State School 1, Borikiri Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The event started out with scheduled screening of the Movie- Akeelah and The Bee across 13 Schools participating schools.

(Akeelah, a young gifted girl, comes from a dysfunctional family and is on the verge of quitting school. She discovers that she has a high aptitude for spelling and enters a spelling bee contest)

Each of the participating Schools in Port Harcourt had 2 Candidates representing the Junior and Senior Category respectively.

The competition had four quintessential Judges; Mr Ebenezar Wikina, Ms Blessing Ekpo, Ms Anita Okwonze and Mr Chukwuemeka Ezeaku with an audience of over 250 persons.

It was a thrilling experience as our judges left no stone unturned in keeping to the standards of global competitions.

Our Winners were:

  1. Christabel Apiril – Junior Category

Word: COLOSSAL –
Origin: Greek Word Kolossos meaning ‘gigantic statue’

School: State Primary School, Ibadan.

  1. Joy Chioma Gabriel -Senior Category Winner

Word: Gnome from French; from modern Latin gnomus

Meaning: A word denoting a race of small people from some parts of Ethiopia and India

School: St. Mary Primary School

Our major partners that aided the fruition of this deed are; Nigerian Info FM PH, Bridges To Tomorrow, Dr Weyoms, and Rivers State Primary School Board (UBE) amongst others.

Prizes: Cash Prizes worth N50,000 with IPAD, School Materials and Scholarship.

Summarily, we are delighted about a successful maiden edition of the Spelling Bee Competition.

We hope to do this every year to give the average Nigerian child a taste of quality education.
